Do I need to enter my Social Security Number (SSN)?

You’ll be asked to enter the Social Security Numbers (SSNs) for the people on your application.

Enter each person’s 9-digit SSN. We verify the SSN with Social Security based on the consent you gave at the start of the application. Leave the field blank if a person doesn’t have an SSN. Don’t enter Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) or any other numbers here.

How do I use my Exemption Certificate Number (ECN)?

If you apply for an exemption from the shared responsibility payment, you’ll get a notice of exemption eligibility from the Marketplace. The notice displays an Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) for each person that qualifies on your Exemption application. It’s in the “Eligibility Results” column in the notice.

You’ll need the ECN

  • To enroll in a Catastrophic health plan in the Marketplace, if you qualify for a hardship or affordability exemption and complete an application for Marketplace coverage.
  • To complete IRS Form 8965—Health Coverage Exemptions, if you plan to file a federal income tax return. You need to use this form when you file so the IRS knows that this person has an exemption from the requirement to have health insurance.
Ending your Marketplace plan if you have Medicaid or CHIP

If you’re enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), you don’t qualify for premium tax credits or other savings for a Marketplace plan. If you still want a Marketplace plan, you’d have to pay full price.

Entering my address information

You'll be asked to enter a home address and a mailing address. You may also be asked to enter this information for your dependents, if they'll be covered by your employer's SHOP plan.

The home address can't be a P.O. box.

It's OK if the mailing address is either a street address or a P.O. box.

How do I find my Eligibility Results?

You’ll first get your “Eligibility Results” after you submit your Marketplace application. But, you can also go back and view them at any time by following these steps:

Did any of these people recently gain an eligible immigration status?

You may be asked if you’ve recently gained one of these immigration statuses. If you have, select your name (or the name of the person in your household who recently gained eligible immigration status).

Health services through Indian programs

You’ll be asked if you’ve ever gotten a health service from the Indian Health Service, a tribal health program, or urban Indian health program or through a referral from one of these programs. Even if you’ve only gotten a service once, select “Yes.” It doesn’t matter how long ago you got the service(s).

American Indian and Alaska Native questions

American Indians and Alaska Natives may qualify for special benefits through the Marketplace. If you or anyone else on your application is American Indian or Alaska Native, select “Yes” when you’re asked this question.

Family & household relationships

We need to know about everyone who is applying for health coverage and their relationships to each other.

How do I find my application ID?

Each Marketplace application has a unique identification number or application ID (sometimes called just an “APP ID” or “ID”).

How can I verify my identity?

If we can't verify your identity, we’ll let you know if you need to submit documents to the Marketplace. Learn how to upload documents.
