Paying your Marketplace premiums

Share:

After you’ve completed your Marketplace application, you’ll see which types of coverage you’re eligible for. If you’re eligible for Marketplace coverage and continue to enroll in a plan, you have to pay your first premium for your coverage to start.

How do I pay my premium?

You’ll make your payment directly to your insurance company – not to the Health Insurance Marketplace®.

You’ll see more information about paying your premiums after you enroll. Usually, once you complete your enrollment, you’ll see a green button that says “PAY FOR HEALTH PLAN NOW.” If you click this button, you’ll be taken to the insurance company’s website to pay. Your insurance company may also contact you with payment instructions by phone, mail, or email. Be sure to carefully follow your insurer’s payment instructions, since different insurance companies handle premium payments differently.

You can also contact your insurer directly to get information about payment options and the due date.

When do I pay for coverage?

Your coverage won’t start until you pay your first premium, which is due no earlier than your plan’s effective date of coverage (usually the 1st of the month). Follow the instructions from your insurer about the due date for your premium payment.

How do I know if I paid my premium?

If you’re not sure if you paid your premium, call your insurance company. They can confirm this information for you. You’ll see the insurance company’s phone number on the screen after you enroll. Or, look at your plan brochure or go to their website to find their phone number.
