What if my household files more than one tax return?

Share:

You and your family may be eligible for tax credits, cost-sharing reductions, or coverage through Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). If you want to see if you qualify for help paying for coverage, we’ll ask if you plan to file taxes and who will be on your tax return for the year that you’re applying for coverage.

Some households, like households with domestic partners or parents with children who file their own taxes, may file more than one tax return. If your household files more than one tax return and wants to be determined eligible for a tax credit, you and your family will need to submit separate applications for each tax household.

Should I include my child on my application?

If you (and your spouse, if you have one):

  • claim your child as a tax dependent, include them on the same application as you to apply for a tax credit, even if they file their own taxes, too. They can be on the same plan and policy, if they choose.
  • don’t claim your child as a tax dependent and they file their own taxes, your child should fill out his or her own application to apply for a tax credit. They can select the same plan as you, if they choose, but will be on a different policy.

Note: the same rules apply for all tax dependents. For example, children who claim their parents as tax dependents on their tax return would need to follow these same instructions.
