What if my state application was transferred to the Marketplace?

Share:

If you applied for a state health program, or you made changes to your state program information, you may get a letter telling you that someone on your application doesn’t qualify for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in your state. Your letter will explain that your state application information was transferred to the Health Insurance Marketplace®.

When this happens, you may be able to get coverage through the Marketplace, and get help paying for health coverage and health services through:

  • A premium tax credit that can be used right away to lower your monthly health insurance premium costs
  • Health plans that lower your out-of-pocket costs

You’ll need the Application ID number that’s shown at the top of the letter you got from the Marketplace. Use this Application ID number to view, complete and submit your application in the Marketplace.

Get details to complete your Marketplace application — You’ll learn how to answer questions about losing Medicaid/CHIP coverage.

Check with your employer about job-based coverage.
Your employer may offer health insurance. If they do, find out how to decide between job-based or Marketplace coverage.

Have changes since you applied with your state?

If you've had changes like household income or size, you should start a new Marketplace application. Select your state and start a new Marketplace application for the year you want coverage, so it includes all of your updated information.

If you give new information on your Marketplace application, you may get different results. For example, if you give different information about your household size or income, you may find out you’re eligible for Medicaid or CHIP programs, even if you weren’t when you first applied with your state agency.

What if I already started a Marketplace application?

If you already started a Marketplace application, but you’re not enrolled in coverage, you can choose which application you want to use - the new transferred application or the one you already started.

  • To use a Marketplace application you already started: Finish and submit your application and follow all steps through enrollment. Check that the application has all of your updated information.
  • To use a Marketplace application you already submitted for this year: Select “Report a life change” and indicate you lost coverage and provide updated information about things like your household size or income.
  • To use a Marketplace application you already submitted during Open Enrollment for next year’s coverage: Select your application and then continue to enroll in a plan.
  • If you sent a paper application to the Marketplace or applied through the Marketplace Call Center: Select “Find my application,” then enter your Application ID number. Select “In-Progress application” to complete and submit your application, then compare plans and enroll. If you already submitted an application but haven’t enrolled yet, select “Submitted application” to compare plans and enroll.

What happens to my old application?

When you submit an application, it becomes your current and active application. Any other applications you have are no longer active.
